Clay Aiken comes out
Clay Aiken, the 29 year old runner-up on American Idol and pop-sensation, is ready to admit that he is a homosexual. Aiken appeared on the cover of “People” magazine holding his infant son with the headline, “Yes, I’m Gay”. As a multiplatinum recording artist and Broadway star, Aiken has long dealt with swirling rumors that he might be homosexual or bisexual. He had previously responded to such rumors in an Associated Press interview two years ago by saying, “I don’t really feel like I have anybody to answer to but myself and God and the people I love.” Aiken recently had a son by use of in-vitro fertilization and credits producer and friend Jaymes Foster with convincing him that he could not, and should not, hide his homosexuality any longer. “It was the first decision I made as a father,” Aiken told People magazine, “I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that.” Prominent gay groups have applauded Aiken’s honesty:
“We congratulate Clay for making this decision and for setting an example for others and his family,” said Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. As we’re seeing, more and more gay people, including celebrities, are living openly and honestly, and this has tremendous impact in terms of creating awareness, understanding and acceptance.”
All of this controversy comes on the heels of Aiken’s latest CD, titled “On My Way Here”. It is largely suspected that Aiken, who is claims to be a born-again Christian, will suffer from declining interest from the Christians who made up the majority of his fanbase. Correct useage of celebrity reputation management could do alot to minimize the damage.
